Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs
worldwide.  They are known for their wonderful
temperament and devotion to their human family.  They
adore children and will not retaliate, despite
provocation.  Their intelligence makes them easy to
train and their kind, gentle nature allows them to mix
well with other family pets.  Not only does the Golden
Retriever make a superb companion, its combination of
intelligence and gentleness make it an excellent choice
as a guide dog for the blind, hearing dog for the deaf
and as a therapy dog.  Golden Retrievers are also used
as "sniffer dogs", detecting drugs, arms and explosives.

A Golden Retriever is a medium-sized, lively dog
requiring regular exercise and grooming.  The standards
for Golden Retrievers are as follows.  Females should
be 21 1/2--22 1/2 inches at the shoulders and weigh
up to 65 pounds.  A Golden male is 23-24 inches at the
shoulder having a weight up to 75 pounds.  Goldens
should be brushed every few days, and every day while
shedding in the spring, to remove loose hair and
prevent mats from forming.  Depending on personal
preference, Goldens may need minimal trimming of the
ears, neck, feet and tail.  Most Goldens adore water, so
be prepared to rinse your dog's coat after a swim in a
muddy stream or salt water.
